Bill and Derek arrived outside the Troy Deeney Atrium. They looked up and saw that the club’s name on the back of the Vicarage Road Stand was Watford again.
‘There we are, my boy. Everything’s as it was,’ Bill said. ‘In the end, I’m glad we aren’t called Colney Butts.’
Derek said: ‘It’s certainly going to be a lot less embarrassing, sir. We won’t be the butts of everyone’s jokes now, sir.’
‘Yes, I’m glad Roy From IT has got everything back to normal, my boy. I was worried we’d find that the old message board website from years ago — A Big Watford Love — had been rebranded “A Big Butts Love” and we’d have had no end of trouble with Henry wanting to look at pictures of—’
‘That’s enough, sir,’ Derek interrupted. ‘I get what you mean, sir.’
For a few moments, Bill reflected on the day’s events. Then he said: ‘Well, I don’t know about you, my boy, but I feel I’ve learned a lesson. Today has taught me that I really shouldn’t worry so much about changes the club makes down on earth — to colours and badges and so on. Maybe the only thing that really matters to us about the club’s identity is that it’s the club we’ve always supported and always will. Beyond that, the details can change.’
Derek nodded and said: ‘I think that’s very wise, sir. At the moment, I like it that we can say “We are Watford”, sir. But, if the name ever changes, we’ll be whatever the new name is, sir.’
‘Exactly,’ Bill agreed.
‘And personally, sir, I don’t mind if the club keeps making small changes to please superficial followers of fancies — like Mr Grover, sir — as long as the overall path satisfies sticklers for the right thing — like yourself, sir.’
Bill accepted his young assistant’s flattery. ‘Indeed, my boy. Thank you… Now, young man, where were we? What were we talking about when we—’
‘Black shorts, sir.’
‘Ah, yes. I was being a stickler for the right thing!’ Bill said with a chuckle. ‘Fingers crossed for the new season, eh?’
